Law360 Names Stueve Siegel Hanson’s Norman Siegel Among its “MVPs of the Year”

11.12.2019

Law360 announced today that Norman Siegel has been selected as one of its MVPs of the Year in the Cybersecurity and Privacy category. According to the publication, the prestigious honor is awarded to attorneys who have “distinguished themselves from their peers by securing hard-earned successes in high-stakes litigation, complex global matters and record-breaking deals.” The full list of Law360 MVPs is available here. The publication received 900 submissions for the 2019 edition and ultimately selected 160 MVPs in 35 practice areas. Siegel is just one of three lawyers designated as an MVP in the cybersecurity field and is the only attorney from Kansas City to be recognized in the 2019 list.

Siegel’s 2019 accomplishments in cybersecurity and privacy law include leading the team that secured preliminary approval of a $1.5 billion settlement with Equifax in a nationwide class action resulting from its massive 2017 data breach.

As chair of the Plaintiffs’ settlement committee, Siegel engineered the historic settlement that provided relief for numerous vulnerabilities exposed by the breach including monetary reimbursement for out-of-pocket losses; credit monitoring benefits; identity restoration services; and a consent order providing Equifax spend at least $1 billion to implement the most rigorous business practice changes ever achieved in civil data breach litigation.

Siegel also recently obtained a $3.25 million settlement in Hutton v. National Board of Examiners in Optometry, Inc. – a class action by optometrists following a data breach at the national testing organization for new eye doctors – and earned a victory in the appellate courts when the Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia reversed the trial court’s ruling dismissing a data breach class action against the Office of Personnel Management.

Siegel was recently named lead counsel on behalf of patients of Quest Diagnostics in the massive AMCA data breach litigation consolidated in the District of New Jersey and is actively pursuing several other data breach and privacy cases around the country.

This award marks the most recent recognition by Law360 of the firm’s data breach and cybersecurity litigation practice – in September the publication named firm attorney Austin Moore as one of its 2019 Cybersecurity and Privacy Rising Stars. Moore and Stueve Siegel partner Barrett Vahle have also been named to lead data breach litigation against Citrix Systems and Dominion National. An industry leader in this emerging area of law, Stueve Siegel Hanson attorneys have prosecuted cases involving the largest data breaches in U.S. history, securing billions of dollars for affected consumers.
