Mr. Cooper DATA BREACH
Mr. Cooper, formerly known as Nationstar Mortgage, is one of the largest home loan servicers in the United States. Many individuals become customers of Mr. Cooper when their home mortgage is transferred to the company for loan servicing without their input.
On October 31, 2023, Mr. Cooper suffered a data breach where an unauthorized party gained access to certain technology systems within the company, resulting in a system-wide outage. The impacted systems include Cooper’s payment processing system, preventing customers from being able to pay their mortgages.
As part of servicing loans, Mr. Cooper collects and retains significant amounts of customer information including names, addresses, home loan history, credit information, driver’s licenses, and financial account information. Mr. Cooper has not yet disclosed what information was compromised in the breach.
On November 22, 2023, Stueve Siegel Hanson filed a class action lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas. The case asserts claims for breach of contract, negligence, and unjust enrichment, among other claims.
