Siegel Named “Lawyer of the Year” for Mass Tort Litigation/Class Actions

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – August 15, 2019 – Best Lawyers announced today that Norman Siegel has been named the 2020 Mass Tort Litigation/Class Actions - Plaintiffs “Lawyer of the Year” in Kansas City, Mo. The publication recognizes just one lawyer in each practice area and community with the “Lawyer of the Year” designation.

Siegel was also included in the 2020 edition of The Best Lawyers in America for commercial litigation, consumer protection law, and mass tort litigation/class actions - plaintiffs. He has been listed by the publication since 2014.

The “Lawyer of the Year” recognition follows last month’s high-profile announcement that Siegel led a team that secured a settlement valued at over $1.5 billion with Equifax in a nationwide class action resulting from its massive 2017 data breach. Siegel, who chaired the Plaintiffs’ settlement committee, was instrumental in engineering the state-of-the-art settlement that is significant not just for the dollar amount, but also its multifaceted relief for consumers.

The settlement marked the most recent success for the firm’s data breach and cybersecurity litigation practice, which has prosecuted cases involving the largest data breaches in U.S. history, security billions of dollars for affected consumers.

Since representing millions of customers following Target’s major data breach in 2013 – and securing a settlement recognized by Missouri Lawyers Weekly as one of the largest of 2015 – Siegel has pivotally led the development of the data breach and cybersecurity practice; quickly establishing the firm as an industry-leader nationwide for this emerging legal field. In April, Siegel was appointed to the plaintiffs’ steering committee representing consumers in response to the massive four-year data breach suffered by Marriott.

Siegel’s additional recent work includes multimillion-dollar jury verdicts and settlements on behalf of consumers who were overcharged for life insurance policies. In Vogt v. State Farm Insurance Co., he delivered the closing argument to the jury that returned a $34 million verdict for Missouri owners of State Farm life insurance. Siegel also served as lead counsel in Larson v. John Hancock Life Insurance Co., a nationwide class action that ultimately settled for $59.75 million just before trial.
