Prescription Drug Plavix Investigation

Stueve Siegel Hanson is investigating claims concerning the prescription drug Plavix (clopidogrel bisulfate).  Plavix is a prescription blood thinner manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb Company and co-marketed in the United States by Sanofi-Aventis. Plavix, approved in the United States in 1997, is prescribed to reduce risks of atherosclerotic events such as blood clot, stroke, and heart attack in patients with a history of these conditions. Plavix has generated about $42.8 billion in sales since its approval.

Patients normally take Plavix after a stroke, heart attack, or other indications of artery disease.  Individuals, insurance companies and public assistance programs like Medicaid pay a premium price for Plavix, but allegedly it is no more effective than aspirin for certain indicated usages.

Stueve Siegel Hanson is investigating allegations that Bristol-Myers and Sanofi-Aventis misrepresented the nature of Plavix, investing in a multimillion-dollar advertising campaign touting Plavix's supposed superiority to aspirin so that consumers would ask their doctors for a prescription, continued to push the drug's supposed benefits over aspirin even when evidence emerged that that wasn't true and even manipulated the results of clinical studies, the complaint alleges.

Bristol-Myers and Sanofi are also accused of manipulating clinical trial data to falsely support claims Plavix was superior to cheaper drugs — in particular aspirin, which costs 4 cents per pill against $4 per pill for Plavix — in preventing stroke, heart attack and vascular death and downplaying contradictory studies and known health risks of the treatment.

The companies also allegedly instructed their sales staff to target their marketing of Plavix at doctors with large percentages of patients whose treatment was billed to state and federal government health care programs such as Medicare and Medicaid.
