After a stint as the Chief of Staff for Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster, Matt returned to Stueve Siegel Hanson in January 2012. Matt previously worked with the firm from 2006 to 2009. Matt works in the firm's public client, commercial litigation and securities practices.
In his capacity as Chief of Staff, Matt served on the Executive Team that managed every significant piece of litigation in the Missouri Attorney General's Office, which ranged from criminal matters to important civil matters worth hundreds of millions of dollars to the state of Missouri. Matt also engaged with other state attorneys general in multi-state investigations, and coordinated efforts with other state and federal authorities including the Department of Justice and the SEC.
Matt oversaw the implementation of several policy initiatives within the office, and he managed investigations into a wide variety of conduct, including labor violations, securities fraud, anti-trust violations, and consumer protection violations. Matt litigated constitutional questions impacting the state, including cases concerning the powers and duties of the Missouri Attorney General; tried cases to juries; and argued before the Missouri Supreme Court.
Matt's noteworthy work at the Attorney General's Office included:
- Served as one of the lead attorneys in the office's investigation into "robosigning." Matt continued to serve as a Special Assistant Attorney General in the investigation after his departure, and Matt was instrumental in securing indictments from a Boone County Grand Jury in February 2012;
- Resolved a case against a major shipping company concerning misclassification of its workers;
- Coordinated the office's response to the May 2011 tornado that devastated Joplin, Missouri; and
- Served as the Attorney General's voting designee on the Missouri Housing Development Commission.
In addition to his legal work, Matt acted as the office's liaison to several community groups and state agencies, and he staffed General Koster in his capacity as a Co-Chair of the Democratic Attorneys General Association (DAGA). Matt also had oversight responsibility for the office's $23 million budget, the office's legislative affairs and communications activities, and the office's personnel policies and decisions.
During his earlier tenure at Stueve Siegel Hanson, Matt litigated in several practice areas, including business disputes, securities litigation, wage and hour enforcement, and consumer protection cases. He was appointed to the lead counsel team in several securities cases concerning auction rate securities, and he served in a leadership capacity on a variety of other class and MDL cases.
Prior to his initial tenure with Stueve Siegel Hanson, Matt clerked for The Honorable Nanette K. Laughrey, United States District Judge for the Western District of Missouri. He also previously worked at a large law firm in Kansas City. Prior to entering law school, Matt served as the Campaign Coordinator for Congressman Ike Skelton.
Matt grew up in Sedalia, Missouri. He is married with three children.
