A class action lawsuit the firm filed against Mitsubishi Motors Corp., Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America Inc. and wheel manufacturer Enkei International Inc. was covered May 21 by WABC-TV, the city's ABC affiliate. Quoted on the broadcast was Pat Stueve, who filed the suit on behalf of purchasers of the Mitsubishi Eclipse between 1997 and 2001.
The lawsuit charges that the defendants knew or should have known that 17-inch tire rims on the Eclipse were prone to bending under normal driving conditions, leading to blowouts, cut tires or rapid deflation. The station reported that four crashes had been reported, although there have been no injuries or fatalities.
Mitsubishi has denied the allegations and says it is working with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to investigate. The two-part rims and six-spoke rims were mounted on 1997 through 2001 models.
The suit was filed in Johnson County District Court in November. WABC came across it after a New York resident called the alleged problem to WABC's attention.
The named plaintiff in the action, Kansas City resident Charles Loose, has been joined by more than 200 complainants, according to Stueve. About 100,000 people are thought to be potential members of the class.
